About Us

History
Our band was formed in the Fall of 1997 as the "Chesterfield Community Band", in cooperation with the Chesterfield County Department of Parks and Recreation. Since then, we have dedicated ourselves to providing an opportunity for residents of the greater Richmond and Tri-City areas to perform the finest in concert band music. In 2018 we came to the conclusion that while we are indeed a "community" band, many in the community did not know what that meant. To better describe what type of band we are, we made the decision to change our name to the "Chesterfield Concert Band."
In 2018 we also added The Chesterfield Jazz Ensemble as an extension of our band, featuring approximately twenty members of our Concert Band. The Chesterfield Jazz Ensemble is made up of trumpets, saxophones, lower brass instruments, and a rhythm section which includes a drummer, Latin percussionist, pianist, and bass guitarist. Our Jazz Ensemble also features a vocalist, and plays classic, standard, and popular Jazz selections. The Jazz Ensemble performs with our Concert Band when the venue or performance permits, and performs on their own at other times, and at different venues.
General Information
Our all-volunteer concert band has grown to more than 60 diverse members, from college students to retirees. Many of our members have returned to playing their instrument after many years of not playing music for quite some time. Others are music educators who work in local school systems, retired music educators, and semi-professional and even professional musicians, who perform with other bands and ensembles regularly throughout the area, who enjoy being part of this community concert band family of musicians.
Membership in the Concert Band is determined by openings in the sections. Membership in the Jazz Band is by invitation only. We welcome your interest in the band, and hope to welcome you as a member!
